Five PhD Studentship in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics, Uppsala University, Sweden

The department conducts research and provides education at graduate and undergraduate level in broad areas of mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics and mathematical logic. We also have an active research group in financial mathematics, and Uppsala’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics is closely linked to the department. The number of employees is nearly 100, of which approximately 30 are doctoral students.

Duties: The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts 4 years. The job may also involve to a limited extent (maximum 20 %) other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum 5 years. The salary level is set by the university regulations.

Required qualifications: In order to be employed as a doctoral student, the candidate will have to be admitted to the research education programme, and for this, his/her potential ability to pursue the programme is decisive. The applicant should have a master’s degree in mathematics or an equivalent, or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than 1 July 2011. He/she should have a good command of spoken and written English.

King’s-ESRC Doctoral Studentships in Social Science, UK

ESRC studentships are available from the KISS-DTC for UK and EU students who meet residency requirements set out by the ESRC. Please consult the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guide for full details on residential eligibility requirements.
Applicants for ESRC studentship funding must have applied for or already been accepted for admission to MPhil/PhD study in the social sciences at King’s, starting in 2011/12. While interdisciplinarity is a hallmark of research at King’s and we are keen to support social science research at the interfaces with the humanities, with the medical sciences, and with the natural and mathematical sciences, ESRC studentship funding is only available for projects that fall substantially (>66%) within the broad social and behavioural science remit of the ESRC.

ESRC studentship funding is highly competitive. In view of the limited number of awards and the very high standard of applications received, successful applicants are likely to have a very good first degree (BA or BSc Honours or equivalent), at first class standard (or upper second class with clear evidence of first class work), and typically also an appropriate Masters degree (at distinction or at least high merit level) and/or another appropriate qualification, such as prior professional or work-related expertise, relevant to your proposed area of study.

All admissions applications require two references to be submitted in support. Please ensure that your chosen referees are aware of the funding deadline, as we will be using these to help us evaluate your ESRC studentship application.
