Microsoft Research India PhD Fellowships: computer science and related areas.

The fellowships are awarded after a rigorous selection process that includes application, letters of reference, and selection by a panel of leading researchers.

For each academic year, Microsoft Research India awards five PhD Fellowships.
* The award comprises a monthly stipend that will be disbursed to the awardee over a maximum period of four years. This monthly sum can be used for tuition, books, stipends, and/or any other expenses.
* Each PhD Fellow receives a laptop computer and a separate sum of Rs 2,50,000 (rupees two lakh fifty thousand only) for travel to conferences and seminars during the term of the Fellowship.
* Each Fellow will be invited to various events conducted by Microsoft Research and will have the opportunity to interact with researchers at Microsoft Research India.

We are now accepting applications for 2011 Microsoft Research India PhD Fellowships.

Application Eligibility
* The Fellowships are open to PhD students who are enrolled at an Indian university.
* Beginning PhD students through students in the third year of their PhD program are eligible to apply.
* Eligible students must be enrolled in computer science, electrical engineering, electrical/electronics communication engineering, mathematics, or a field that closely relates to computer science.

2011 Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships

Top-class researchers from Third Countries are welcome to work on projects in Europe. This helps to develop research cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world – to everybody’s benefit.
Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships are specially designed to encourage these moves.

Who can apply?
Researchers of any nationality active or recently active in Third Countries are eligible for an IIF. That means countries that are neither EU Member States nor Associated Countries. To apply, you must have either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years’ full-time equivalent research experience, after obtaining a degree permitting you to embark on a doctorate. But that is the minimum. The more experience you have, the better will be your chances of being accepted for this action.
Your application for an IIF should be made in liaison with the organisation or institution that would be willing to host you in Europe. Host organisations can be universities, research centres or companies.
What does the funding cover?

IIF funding is provided for a research project which will transfer knowledge into your host organisation and building or enhancing collaborations between Europe and the rest of the world. The research project will also allow you to advance your career. Financial support is provided for 12-24 months (full-time equivalent).

Funding allows you to:

* join a European research team that doesn’t have your experience
* establish a collaboration through a research project with your lab or your country
* gain new knowledge in a European lab.

Your IIF may also cover a return phase of up to one year. This will be spent back in your country of origin, applying the experience that you have gained. To qualify for a return phase, you must be from one of the International Cooperation Partner Countries. If you want a return phase, you must include details of it in your initial application. And you must specify the potential return host organization in your country of origin

Which topics can be funded?

All areas of scientific and technological research that are of interest to the EU may be eligible for IIF funding. But there is one exception: research areas covered by the EURATOM Treaty cannot be funded.

Margdarshi Fellowships for Researchers in India: Biomedical Research

This scheme is for scientific leaders who already head a research laboratory, and wish to relocate from their current institution (in India or overseas) to a non-profit research Institute in India.
The Fellowship is for five years, and provides:

* Generous personal support for the Fellow
* Salary support for research personnel, which may include Assistant Professors
* Equipment and consumables
* Funds for travel to attend scientific meetings, collaborative travel and to organize meetings.
* Overheads for the host Institution

Detailed budgets are not required at the time of application. However, if short-listed for interview, the India Alliance will seek a detailed justified budget both from the applicant and the sponsor.

Eligibility

The underlying philosophy in launching this fellowship is to facilitate global standards of scientific excellence in non-profit research institutes across India. Therefore, it is mandatory for interested applicants to relocate with a vision to lead a vibrant group of young scientists and collaborators.

Applicants should have demonstrated strong scientific leadership as independent investigators. In addition to significant contributions in research, applicants should have mentored young scientists and students, attracted extra mural funds from peer-reviewed competitive sources, established collaborations, successfully initiated programmes of advanced scientific research and importantly, maintained high ethical standards. Applicants would have to detail the reasons for leaving their current institution and how the proposed relocation will augment their scientific activities.

There is no age-limit to apply for this Fellowship. Applicants would normally be expected to be running an independent laboratory for 10 years or more. As an exception, for the first round of this competition, applicants who have already relocated, but after May 2010 will be eligible to apply.

Sponsorship

It is mandatory to have an eligible sponsoring host institution in India and an eligible Sponsor from this institution, at the time of applying.

The Sponsor is expected to hold a senior administrative position (for e.g., Directors/ HoD) at the host Institution and would have to fill a separate form. The form aims to understand how the applicant’s research interests and scientific leadership will enhance the research programme at the host institute as well as the type of support and commitment the host Institution is willing to make if the Fellowship were to be awarded.
