H.H. Kildee Scholarship

Tomorrow’s dairy leaders are here today, in 4-H clubs, FFA chapters, college classrooms and on dairy farms across the country. National Dairy Shrine’s task is to encourage, stimulate and inspire them. Since its inception, National Dairy Shrine has recognized the importance of laying a foundation for the future, and has constantly expanded its youth programs to capture and challenge the interest of outstanding dairy youth in our industry. Dairy students, our future leaders, are eligible to apply for these National Dairy Shrine recognition programs and scholarships with awards totaling over $40,000. All National Dairy Shrine scholarships and student awards are for only U.S. students attending schools, colleges or universities in the United States and majoring in dairy industry or other agricultural related fields. The Klussendorf/McKown scholarships are also available to students from Canadian universities. Listed below are qualification details for you to review before you apply for any scholarship. Application Period: Applications are accepted from March 1st through May 1st Please note that a student may only win the same award once! Previous non-winners if they still qualify are welcome to reapply the next year. (It is necessary to send only one transcript of your school coursework and grades even if you apply for more than one scholarship.) NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS AVAILABLE Kildee Scholarships Kildee scholarships are named for H.H. Kildee, Dean Emeritus at Iowa State University, whose council, encouragement, and teaching inspired many of the industry’s previous dairy leaders. NDS / KILDEE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS (2 at $3,000) The top 25 All-American contestants in the past three National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contests plus the Platinum winners in the past three National Dairy Challenge Contests are eligible to apply for up to two $3,000 scholarships for post graduate study in a dairy related field. Students may apply for the scholarship in their junior or senior year of college. The awards are base on rank in the national contests, academic standing, leadership ability, student activities, future plans and experience with dairy cattle. Application Deadline is May 1, 2011. Download a Kildee Graduate Application NDS / KILDEE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (1 at $2,000) The top 25 participants in a National 4-H or FFA Dairy Judging Contests qualify for one $2,000 scholarship for undergraduate study. ONLY COLLEGE students who have received junior or senior status can apply. Application Deadline is May 1, 2011. Download a Kildee Undergraduate application NDS / STUDENT RECOGNITION PROGRAM (1st – $2,000; 2nd – $1,500; 3rd through 7th – $1000 ) (Number of awards is dependent on number and quality of applicants). The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward graduating college seniors who are planning a career related to dairy or production agriculture and who have demonstrated leadership skills, activities, academic ability and interest in dairy cattle. Each university can nominate up to two students for this award. Co-sponsored with Dairy Management Inc. Application Deadline is May 1, 2011. Download a Student Recognition application NDS / DAIRY MANAGEMENT INC (1st – $1,500; 2nd through 7th – $1,000) (Number of awards is dependent on number and quality of applicants). These scholarships are provided to encourage undergraduate sophomores and junior students to pursue careers in marketing of milk or dairy products. Major areas can include: Dairy Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Communications, Agricultural Education, General Education and Food and Nutrition. Awards are based on experience ability and interests in dairy/product marketing. Co-sponsored with Dairy Management Inc. Application Deadline is May 1, 2011. Download a DMI Scholarship application NDS/ McCULLOUGH SCHOLARSHIPS (1st-$2,500 & 2nd-$1,000). Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enter a four-year-college or university with intent to major in Dairy/Animal Science with a Communications emphasis or Agricultural Journalism with a Dairy/Animal Science emphasis. Scholarship is based on communication abilities and future plans. This scholarship is sponsored from a bequest fund sponsored by M.E. McCullough, well-known Georgia nutrition researcher, educator and journalist. Application Deadline is May 1, 2011. Download a McCullough Scholarship application NDS / KLUSSENDORF / MCKOWN SCHOLARSHIPS (6 at $2,000 ) Six scholarships will be awarded to students successfully completing their first, second or third years at a 2-year or 4-year college or university in the United States or Canada majoring in dairy science, animal science, agri-business, or other related majors that will develop the skills needed to pursue a career in the dairy industry. Scholarships are based on activities, experience and future plans. These awards are made possible by donations from Chris Kampf, the McKown family and from Klussendorf members and friends. History or background of award
For the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research at Victoria, the University offers scholarships to students about to commence a full-time, research-focussed Master’s degree.
In 2008 over thirty scholarships shall be offered, consisting of a $15,000 stipend, plus domestic fees. International students, other than those from Australia will be liable to pay the difference between the full international student fee and the domestic fee.

Purpose of award
To encourage research at Masters level at Victoria university. Only those students enrolled solely for a 90 point thesis are eligible to apply.

Selection criteria
Only those students enrolled solely for a 90 point thesis or above are eligible to apply. In some cases this will be Part 2 of a two-year Master’s degree and will usually have the course code 591. Students who are enrolled in Master’s degree programmes that have thesis or research components of less than 90 points, or who elect not to enrol for the solely by thesis option, but instead enrol in taught courses, internships, performance, portfolio, practicum, or other programme options, are eligible to apply for the Victoria Graduate Scholarships. Creative Writing candidates are eligible to apply for the Master’s [by thesis] Scholarship.

Scholarship applicants must contact directly the School in which they wish to enrol so that their research proposal and the feasibility of supervision can be assessed. Enrolling as a Masters student and applying for a Victoria Masters Scholarship are two separate processes. The holding of Victoria Masters Scholarship is conditional upon the scholarship recipient gaining enrolment as a Masters student.

Applicants, other than those who have completed all of their study at Victoria, must include a certified copy of their academic record from other institutions with this application. Applicants whose degree has been conferred at any university other than a New Zealand University will be considered in two categories:
Category 1 – applicants from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany or Australia must supply an original or certified copy of their university transcript.
Category 2 – applicants from any other country must have their transcript verified and assessed with a course by course evaluation by one of the below educational evaluators:

Decision makers
Scholarships shall be awarded solely on the basis of academic merit by the University Scholarships Committee, a sub-committee of the University Research Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
All offers for Victoria Master’s Scholarships will be made in late December of the year of application. Some applicants may be placed on a reserve list and will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications until as late as the end of February of the following year. If you are unsuccessful you may be notified by email only. Please provide a clearly written email address if available.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholarship recipients will be expected to sign the Victoria Postgraduate Scholarship Contract. Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period of up-to six months. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their enrolment in the Master’s degree. A scholarship shall be terminated and the corresponding proportion of the scholarship emolument forfeited, if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research or advanced study within one month of the last day of the period of deferment. Scholarship recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a maximum of 600 hours in one calendar year. Each scholarship recipient and his/her principal supervisor shall provide a progress report to the Scholarships Office six months after the commencement of the scholarship. Where progress is not satisfactory, the matter will be referred to the University Scholarships Committee. The University Scholarships Committee may at any time suspend or terminate a scholarship, or require the forfeiture of such proportion of the scholarship emolument as it may determine, if the scholarship recipient is not diligently pursuing their programme of research, has violated the University Statute on Conduct, or has failed to comply with any of the terms and conditions on which the scholarship was awarded.

Who else has information about this award?
Approval for the co-tenure of a Victoria Masters Scholarship with other awards that total more than $6,000 must be sought from the University Scholarships Committee. The co-tenure of other awards may result in a reduction in the value of the scholarship stipend.
