The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

Responsibilities

* Contribute to efforts to develop an improved diagnostic test for CBPP
* Assist with activities supporting the generation of a panel of Mycoplasmamycoides-specific antibodies
* Assist with activities related to the detection of Mycoplasmamycoides proteins expressed in vivo
* Assist with activities related to the genome transplantation and mutagenesis of Mycoplasmamycoides

Requirements
* A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in the field of microbiology, immunology or molecular biology
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment.
* Willingness and ability to travel to partners in Namibia and Europe.

2 Postdoctoral Positions in Evolutionary Microbial (Meta-)Genomics, Switzerland

This fellowship is available in the research group of Dieter Ebert (University of Basel, Switzerland). The research group has an emphasis on the evolution and genetics of host-symbiont interactions

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in evolutionary and microbial genomics, metagenomics and microbiota community structure. A background in any of the following fields is desired: microbiology, bio-informatics,
population genetics, experimental evolutionary ecology, metagenomics and evolutionary genomics. The positions are funded to work on the population structure and functional aspects of host-microbiome interactions in Daphnia. The suggested methodology includes metagenome approaches, comparative metagenomics, experimental studies of host-microbe interactions, QTL typing, and population surveys. Previous experience with Daphnia is not required, but excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, good work ethics, and the ability to think creatively and critically are desired. The working language at the institute is English. Starting dates are flexible, from April 2011 onwards. Positions are funded for 3 years with a 1 year trial period.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, USA

biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry; molecular, cell and developmental biology; immunology; virology and microbiology; neuroscience; physics; and mathematical biology Employer: The Rockefeller University Level: Undergraduate Fellowship Description: The Rockefeller University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to conduct laboratory research. SURF students work with leading scientists in a broad range of areas including biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry; molecular, cell and developmental biology; immunology; virology and microbiology; neuroscience; physics; and mathematical biology.

College sophomores and juniors are eligible to spend 10 weeks during the summer in a Rockefeller University laboratory. The program begins in early June and ends in mid-August. Placement in laboratories is centralized through the Dean’s Office. Students are matched with laboratories according to their stated research interests, and work on projects under the direct supervision of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and/or senior graduate students.

Each year, students are chosen from a wide variety of applicants with diverse scientific backgrounds and training. Annually, more than 500 students apply for admission into the SURF Program and approximately 15 are accepted.

In order to fully experience the world of scientific research, SURF students are required to present and discuss scientific publications at weekly Journal Club meetings. This exposure allows participants to familiarize themselves with speaking to a scientific audience. SURF students also attend a special lecture series where Rockefeller faculty discuss their research and the evolution of their scientific interests. At the end of the program, SURF students will present their research results to fellow students and mentors at a poster session.
