PhD Nanowire Manipulation for Sensing and Spintronics, Netherlands: Applied Physics

This project is implemented in the program on Advanced NanoElectronic Devices within the national program High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM). The program aims at exploring novel concepts for electronic nano-devices with alternative operating principles and enhanced or novel functionality, enabling new applications particularly in hybrid electronic or smart embedded systems. The network will provide the PhD student a stimulating consortium to work in, with regular progress meetings where academic and industrial partners meet. The present project will be performed in close collaboration with the Holst center.

Semiconductor nanowires provide a powerful platform for novel nano-electronic devices, because of their 1d character, their ability to be engineered, and the potential use of hybrid materials choices. This project aims at manipulating single nanowires and addressing single nanowires in large arrays (using dual-beam FIB/SEM technology and local nanoprobing) on MOVPE grown III/V nanowires. Furthermore, we intend to fabricate hybrid semiconductor-ferromagnet nanowire systems, by exploiting our recent expertise in growing ferromagnetic nanostructures by focussed electron-beam induced deposition (FEBID), and explore their functionality. Research will be motivated by applications in (a) inorganic gas-analysis using electrical conductance nanosensors (close collaboration with the Holst center, Eindhoven), and (b) and hybrid magnetic and spintronic devices.

2 PhD Positions, Genetical Genomics of Insect-Plant Interactions, Netherlands

A major impediment in selecting resistant crop lines is that large numbers of crop lines need to be screened for the effects they have on pest insects. Moreover, the mechanisms of resistance to one pest are not necessarily also effective to another pest so that different pest species require their own approach. The goal of this research programme is to develop an automated methodology to screen large numbers of crop lines for resistance to two major pest species in Dutch greenhouse crops, aphids and thrips, and identify the responsible genetic loci by a genetical genomics approach. The method will be developed for Arabidopsis by taking advantage of the HapMap collection of ca 400 Arabidopsis accessions that have been collected globally and genotyped for 250.000 SNPs. Tools will be developed to objectively quantify differences in insect resistance in a rapid and reliable way, and subsequently genes and molecular markers will be identified for different resistance mechanisms in the model plant Arabidopsis. Subsequently, this knowledge will be transferred to ornamental and other crops. In this multidisciplinary proposal, the mechanisms will be characterized at the molecular, biochemical, physiological and ecological level and can subsequently, together with the novel insect behaviour assay systems, be used to screen large numbers of lines of various crop species for orthologous genes and markers involved in similar resistance mechanisms. For this research programme we will employ 2 PhD students.

Eligibility:
An MSc degree in Biology, Plant Biotechnology or Plant Sciences with a multidisciplinary profile. You should be a molecular biologist or plant biotechnologist with affinity to ecology of insect-plant interactions or an insect-plant ecologist that has experience with molecular techniques. Experience with investigating arthropod behaviour, statistics and computer technology will be considered an additional value. You should be a team player with demonstrable experience in collaboration with ecologists, molecular biologists and/or entomologists. Excellent communication skills.

Finnish Government Scholarship 2011-2012, Finland

The Finnish Government offers scholarships of 3-9 months for Doctoral level studies, research and teaching at a higher education institution in Finland. The Finnish Government Scholarship Pool programme is open to young researchers from all academic fields. The scholarships can not be applied for post-Doctoral studies or research.

The scholarships are based mainly on cultural agreements or similar arrangements between Finland and the following countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine.

To be eligible, the applicant must:

* intend to pursue post-Master’s level studies as a visiting student, participate in a research project or teach at a higher education institution or public research institute in Finland; priority will be given to doctoral studies
* have established contact with the Finnish receiving institution before applying
* have a letter of invitation from the academic supervisor in Finland; the invitation should also include a timetable
* have earned a Master’s-level degree before applying
* not have spent already more than one year at a Finnish higher education institution immediately before the intended scholarship period in Finland
* be able to give proof of sufficient skills in speaking and writing the language needed in study/research
* be a national of one of the eligible countries listed above.
