PhD Student Position in Space Physics, Sweden

Applications are invited for a PhD student position to study magnetic reconnection and related space plasma physics phenomena, in particular in the Earth’s magnetosphere, based on the latest scientific data. Magnetic reconnection is an important process in most astrophysical plasma environments; it leads to efficient, fast and often explosive-like conversion of magnetic energy into kinetic energy of plasma particles and to rapid reconfiguration of the magnetic topology. The new PhD student will work directly with experimental data from the international ESA multi-spacecraft mission Cluster. The new PhD student is expected to collaborate actively with several international experimental and theoretical groups studying magnetic reconnection.

The Space Plasma Physics Research Programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics has the main responsibility for the Electric Field and Wave (EFW) instrument on Cluster. We work with data from all instruments on Cluster.

PhD Studentship in Food Technology, Sweden

Emulsifying substances act by contributing to the disruption of the droplets and by protecting the formed droplets from coalescing. To enable these actions the emulsifiers need to adsorb rapidly at the surfaces and form a protective layer. Starch nanocrystals of specific sizes and hydrophobicity will be designed and used as colloidal particles to generate and stabilise Pickering type emulsions. The aim is then to understand their function depending on size, shape, and hydrophobicity in relationship to the interface they are adsorbing to. The use of starch nanocrystals as emulsion stabilisers is novel, and finds practical use not only in pharmaceutical and food applications, but also in the paper industry. Furthermore, the almost irreversible adsorption of colloidal particles creates very stable emulsions in contrast to surfactant molecules.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

The general eligibility requirement for doctoral studies is a university degree of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level. Furthermore you need a valid university degree at advanced level (MSc) within a relevant study program.

To be qualifield for researach education (PhD education) in Food Technology the candidate needs to have a Master of Science in Engineering, specialisation in Biotechnology, Chemical engineering or Ecological enigneering or Master of Science in Chemistry or other discipline relevant to the field of the degree project or other equivalent degree

Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for MPhil/PhD Fieldwork in China

The Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China has been created to honour the memory of Elisabeth Croll (1944-2007), vice principal of SOAS and Professor of Chinese Anthropology. The scholarship offers a current MPhil/PhD student at SOAS £1000 towards the cost of fieldwork in China (Mainland China & Taiwan).
All candidates will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application. The successful candidate will also be notified in writing. Selection will take place in May and candidates should hear of the results by the end of June. If you have not had a response to your application by the end of June, please contact the Scholarships Officer.
Any student accepting an Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China must be enrolled (i.e. full-time, part-time or study leave status) for the academic year in which he/she applies and for the academic year in which his/her Award is taken. Students on Continuation (Writing-up) are not eligible for these awards.

The Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China does not normally consider retrospective applications therefore students are advised to apply in good time before leaving for fieldwork. On completion of the fieldwork, the student must submit a 1000-word report, signed by the supervisor, to the Scholarships Officer within one month of returning to the UK or within one month of the end of the fieldwork, whichever is sooner.

Scholarship Application Deadline:
18 April 2011.
