PhD in Design of Stable Probiotic Bacteria Cultures for New Functional Foods, Denmark

With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within chemical and physical processes related to stability and vitality of freeze dried probiotic bacteria formulation. Instability of dry lactic acid bacteria formulations effectively limits the types and use of ingredient and foods. The project will comprise 3 subprojects: i) Manipulation of the chemical compo­sition and properties of bacteria with emphasis on the phospholipid membrane. ii) Development of oxidation sensitive microscopy methods pertinent to dry and wet bacteria systems. iii) Investigation of the causes of cell death.

The appointee should have documented qualifications and interest in the following areas:

  • Chemistry and physics of food and biomaterials
  • Analytical Techniques
  • Microbiology
  • Bio-imaging

Qualification requirements:

In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:

  • Passed Master´s degree in relation to the above subject area(s)

The Ph.D. fellow is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.

PhD in Bioengineering of Natural Products in Yeast, Denmark

With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD student will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the area of engineering of plant biosynthetic pathways of bioactive components in microorganisms. This project will place particular emphasis on, but is not limited to natural products like glucosinolates. The project will include transport engineering to ensure proper compartmentalization.

The appointee should have competence appropriate for research within the following areas:

  • Yeast genetics
  • Mass spectrometry for metabolite profiling
  • Flux analysis
  • Protein characterization and modelling
  • Transport proteins

Qualification requirements:

In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:

  • Passed Master´s degree in a subject area appropriate to the project described above.
  • The PhD student is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.

Terms of employment:

The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

The position as PhD fellow requires the applicant to be approved for admission to the PhD programme at LIFE when accepted for the post.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Volcano Fluid Dynamics, UK

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol (UK) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in volcano fluid dynamics, as part of a three-year multidisciplinary research project investigating gas-melt flow regimes in volcanic conduits and their characteristic acoustic signals, in conjunction with the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham. One year will be spent at the University of Nottingham to conduct laboratory experiments.

We are looking for a motivated scientist with experience in fluid dynamics (preferably both experimental and theoretical research) and a PhD in engineering, physical volcanology, or applied mathematics. You will carry out and interpret large-scale laboratory experiments to understand gas-liquid flow regimes in conduits and how these relate to eruption style and acoustic signals measured at volcanoes. You will collect and analyse laboratory data, develop physical models to interpret the data, and compare the results to infrasound recordings from volcanoes.

Role holders at this level will have very extensive experience of research leadership and related management/administration. They will enjoy a wide recognition for their expertise within the academic community internationally (as evidenced by conference invitations, journal editorships, office holding in specialist groupings, associations with appropriate Research Councils etc.). They will have made recognised and significant contributions to the developing knowledge and understanding of their research area. They will already have responsibilities for the creation, initiation, development and overall management of significant research programmes. They will ‘profess’ their discipline within the Department, as appropriate and consonant with the terms of their funding. They may also carry significant leadership roles within the Faculty or University.
