Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Electron Microbeam Laboratory, UK

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol (UK) has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Assistant working in the electron microbeam laboratories. There is funding available for 12 months for a part-time (80%) appointment.

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate with substantial experience working with both SEM and EPMA equipment. You will have a PhD or equivalent in a related subject. You will oversee operation of the equipment and supervise users from a variety of backgrounds. You will undertake two pilot research projects in preparation of grant applications. The role will also involve analysis of data collected over the past several years, and working the data into a manuscript(s) for publication.
The Department of Earth Sciences thrives on a research-intensive environment, characterised by individuals and groups of international standing; working collectively or individually on earth science problems of global concern. The department is loosely divided into five research groups, united by a common research goal or common equipment, but with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration between them. A brief summary of these groups and their research goals and membership is given below.

The Deep Earth research group uses high-pressure high-temperature experimental petrology and seismology to study the chemical differentiation of the earth and dynamics of the crust and mantle: Profs: Kendall, Blundy FRS, Helffrich, Walter. Drs: Kohn, Montgomery, Schumacher, Wookey, Rychert. Dohmen, Caricchi, Saunders (+6 PDRA, 7 PG).
The Geochemistry group uses isotopic and elemental abundances to quantify processes from planetary evolution, through melt generation and differentiation, to climate change and surface chemical cycles: Profs: Sherman, Elliott, Vance. Drs: Coath (+9 PDRA, 19 PG).
The Palaeobiology and Biodiversity group, covers a breadth of time scales and organismal groups to understand biological evolution on Earth. Research methodology combines traditional observational studies of fossils with pioneering developments in: numerical and phylogenetic analysis, biomechanical modelling, X-ray tomography and molecular biological techniques, placing the group at the forefront of paleobiological investigations. Profs: Benton. Drs: Anderson, Braddy, Donoghue, Loeffler, Rayfield, Ruta, Rücklin, Schmidt, Hendy. (+3 PDRA, 14 PG)
The Climate and Environmental Change group includes experts in Earth system science, biogeochemistry, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, the carbon cycle, climate change and studies large-scale Earth system processes and interactions, and the linkages among environmental change, human activities and policy. Drs: Cornell, P. Foster, Hendy, Hornibrook, Knorr, Scholze, Siddall, Whitaker. Ms. House (+4 PDRA, 4 PG).

PhD in Neural Stem Cell Biology, University Muenster, Germany

The group for Stem Cell Biology & Regeneration at the ZMBE Institute of Cell Biology the Westphalian Wilhelms- University Muenster, Germany has an open Position for a PhD Student.
Applications are invited for a position within the group of Dr. Jens Schwamborn to investigate the mechanisms of fate specification in neural stem cells.
We investigate how the proliferation and differentiation of adult neural stem cells is regulated. In particular, we are interested in the question how the grade of differentiation of a cell is determined and how stem cell maintenance works. Further on we try to find ways to reprogram differentiated cells back into somatic stem cells. The overall aim of our work is to make endogenously present adult neural stem cells applicable for therapeutic approaches aiming for the replacement of neurons that are lost during neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease).

Successful applicants should have a strong interest in Cell and Neurobiology, particularly experience in Stem Cell Biology would be a plus. We are looking for highly motivated people who share our passion for research, are interested in aquiring new skills and wish to be part of an international team.

Scholarship for International Travel, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Scholarship for International Travel are available to assist Master’s and Doctoral students registered at the University of Cape Town to proceed to an approved international institution for purposes of a visiting scholars programme, for research, or for attendance at specific and approved courses.  The awards are intended for individual senior students and have been established to enhance the research activities being conducted for the completion of the degree.

  • No applications for renewal or extension will be considered.  The awards are restricted to one award per student, per DEGREE. Only ONE application at Master’s level and ONE at Doctoral level can be submitted.  Where students are upgraded from the Masters degree, a second application can be submitted at Doctoral level, but only after 12 months of registration at Doctoral level.
  • UCT Scholarships for International Travel and UCT Conference Travel Grants cannot be held concurrently in any one year.
  • Only students in the first and second years of Master’s study and the first, second or third years of doctoral study, will be considered. (3rd year Masters and 4th year PhD students are NOT ELIGIBLE).
  • Successful applicants are required to submit a full report on the work completed and the time spent at the international institution.  The reports must be submitted to the DVC for Research and Innovation, c/o the PFO, within three weeks of the student’s return to UCT.  The report must illustrate the value of the time spent abroad.  Such reports may be included or referred to in the University’s Annual Research Report.  Failure to submit the required report will result in cancellation of the scholarship and withdrawal of the funds provided.
  • Before payment  can be made of any award offered, successful applicants are required to show evidence that the balance of funds required has been secured.
  • NOTE:  There are two rounds of application/award per annum:
  • Students applying to travel abroad in April, May, June, July, and August , September 2010 must submit their applications by no later than 28 February 2010.
