PHIFP is a 2-year paid fellowship in public health informatics. The competency-based and hands-on training allows you to apply information and computer science and technology to solve real-world problems.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about informatics and public health
  • Work with teams involved in research and development of public health information systems
  • Lead an informatics project
  • Design, develop, implement, evaluate, and manage public health information systems .

  • Meet both the educational and professional requirements
  • Be willing to commit to a 2-year full-time program
  • Be willing to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia
      • Educational Requirements:A doctoral (PhD, MD) or masters level degree is required. Qualifying degree must be from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:

    • Public health, medicine, health care, health-services research
    • Computer science, information science, information systems
    • Statistics
    • Epidemiology
    • Public health informatics or related discipline
      Professional Requirements:Documented 1-year experience for doctoral level candidates and 3-year experience for masters level candidates is required in one of the following fields:

    • Public health informatics
    • Health informatics or related field
    • Information systems
    • Information science
    • Computer science
    • Information technology

      • Additionally, documented 1-year experience for doctoral level candidates and 3-year experience for masters level candidates is required in one of the following areas:

    • Public health
    • Related healthcare profession (medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, dentistry, allied health professions)
      Research Requirements:Documented experience in performing research or evaluation during or after academic training (e.g., publication, thesis, poster presentation, research/evaluation proposal).

    PhD Scholarship of Biosciences BBSRC CASE Award: Exploiting Next-Generation Sequencing Data for Measurement of Biological Phenomena, UK

    Based in the School of Biosciences and offered in collaboration with the LGC, this BBSRC CASE award will look at next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, which have the potential to be used for measurement of a wide range of biological, environmental, and toxicological phenomena. The project will involve testing and validating NGS methods, including consistency between alternative methods (e.g. Illumina, 454, Quantitative PCR), accuracy, dynamic range for optimal accuracy, the robustness of technologies to increasingly complex mixtures of test material, variations in DNA library preparation protocols, inherent biases of each method and ability to reproduce measurements.

    As part of the award you will have access to standard reference biological materials (well-characterised mixtures of two or more bacterial strains, for example) as well as Illumina (via Exeter) and 454 (via LGC) NGS platforms. You will also have access to more established analytical methods such as quantitative PCR. The first step will be to devise a series of metrics of reproducibility and bias. As well as classical statistical approaches such as linear regression, the project will also make use of bioinformatics approaches for tasks such as quality-filtering and mapping reads against reference sequences.

    You will spend at least 6 months seconded to LGC’s laboratories in Teddington and it is also likely that you will have the opportunity to spend some time at one of LGC’s sites abroad (e.g. the Berlin laboratories where the 454 instrument is based).

    PhD Fellowships at Bielefeld University, Germany

    In the framework of an International Graduate College (International Research Training Group, supported by DFG) we offer fellowships for a PhD program starting October 1, 2010, for up to 3 years duration.

    The program is organized by the Bielefeld University Mathematics Department in cooperation with the Departments of Economics and Physics, the research institutions IMW and BiBoS, and together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (partner institutions: IAM, AMSS, GUCAS). Doctorate degrees will be awarded by one of the three Departments of Bielefeld University.

    The interdisciplinary training and research program is oriented towards the study of modern methods in Stochastics and their application in Physics and Economics. A structured course program will enable students to undertake research projects without undue delay. Lectures and courses by visiting scientists, as well as the exchange program with China, will further contribute to a broad and internationally viable education.

    Graduates (Master level) from the aforementioned three fields with a pronounced interest in Mathematics and its interdisciplinary applications are encouraged to apply.
    We are aiming to increase the proportion of female researchers in the college; given
    parity with respect to all other relevant criteria, female applicants will receive preferential
    treatment in the fellowship awarding decisions.
