2011 PhD Studentship: fMRI Decoding of Mental State at Radboud University, Netherlands

We invite applications for a PhD position at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. You will be working on the NWO project Sparse Learning of Deep Models which aims to improve the decoding of what someone perceives or imagines from brain activity alone. In this project, you will develop probabilistic machine learning methods and collect fMRI data at the institute’s 3 Tesla MRI facility.

You are highly motivated and have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, or a related field of study. Experience with Matlab programming and data analysis is a must. Experience with functional magnetic resonance imaging and/or machine learning is desirable. You should have a demonstrated interest in and qualification for scientific research, be able to work in an interdisciplinary team in an international context, and have excellent writing skills in English.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 May 2011

ADBE Consumers and Possessions Studentship, UK: Consumers and Possessions: A Cross-Disciplinary Exploration of Sustainable Practices

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. The need to enhance understanding of human behaviour in order to progress towards sustainable patterns of consumption is well recognised, as is evidence that design of our possessions and surroundings locks us into particular forms of behaviour. This is a cross-disciplinary studentship involving research into how people use their possessions and the built environment with regard to sustainability and the implications of this for design practice. One of its key elements will be to relate knowledge in sustainable architecture, sustainable fashion and sustainable product design. Our past research has found evidence of inconsistent behaviour among consumers with regard to their influence upon the environmental impact of different products. Further research is needed to explain these inconsistencies and the University’s Sustainable Consumption Research Group is currently planning a series of cross-disciplinary seminars. These will explore the use of buildings, clothing, household goods and vehicles and consider factors that may lead them to be used in a sustainable manner and reasons for inconsistencies in user behaviour. Other research at the University has proposed a theoretical case for addressing the effect of the material form of products on people’s behaviour. The University’s OPEN Research Group (Objects, Practices, Experiences and Networks) is currently running a series of events through which different perspectives on materials and materiality are being explored. The output of these two initiatives will underpin this studentship, which is intended to enhance understanding of pro-environmental behaviour change.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 15 April 2011

PhD Student Fellowship: Transcriptome Data Analysis and Modeling of Aspergillus fumigatus – Phagocytes Interaction, Germany

Dynamic models for the interaction between fungal pathogen A. fumigatus and phagocytes shall be inferred from RNA?Seq? and microarray?based gene expression data integrating the available prior knowledge. RNA?seq data analysis shall be used to search for splice variants and small regulatory non?coding RNA species and to study their impact for the fungal phagocytose interaction. The inferred models shall be aggregated, scaled?down to predictive minimal models and used for experiment design.

We expect:
• a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Bioinformatics. Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcome to apply.
• required methodological skills: data and biodatabase mining, mathematical modeling
• high motivation and interest in joining one of the interdisciplinary research areas of the JSMC
• creativity and interest in shaping your own thesis project
• an integrative and cooperative personality
• very good communication skills in English (the language of instruction at the JSMC)

We offer:
• a highly communicative atmosphere within a scientific network providing top?level research
conditions
• a PhD stipend paid for three years according to the rules of the DFG (German Research
Foundation) as well as generous research funding
• a comprehensive mentoring program with efficient supervision by a team of supervisors
• a top?level PhD training program with courses in state?of?the?art research technologies and soft skills
• Jena – the German City of Science 2008: a young and lively town with dynamic business activities, successful scientific centers of innovation and a vibrant cultural scene around the famous Friedrich Schiller University

The application procedure takes place exclusively online via the JSMC website:www.jsmc.uni?jena.de

To apply, please acquaint yourself with the open PhD projects and the application process described on this website. Applications can only be considered upon receipt of the completed ‘Statement of Interest’ form, submitted by email to apply-jsmc-at-uni-jena.de before the deadlines listed below.
Selected applicants will be invited to a JSMC Recruitment Meeting in Jena, Germany, in June 2011. Award decisions will be made shortly thereafter, allowing the PhD projects to start immediately.

Scholarship Application Deadline: (i.e. deadlines for submission of the completed ‘Statement of Interest’ form):
Deadline for applicants who will require a visa to enter Germany and attend the recruitment meeting in June: April 6, 2011
