PhD and Postdoctoral Positions for the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) TOPOMOD

We are searching for strongly motivated young scientists at both the Early Stage (PhD) and Experienced (PostDoc) level in the frame of TOPOMOD, a training project designed to investigate and model the origin and evolution of topography of the continents over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The multi-disciplinary approach combines geophysics, geochemistry, tectonics and structural geology with advanced geodynamic modelling.

TOPOMOD will provide to 13 Early Stage Researchers/PhD students and 2 Experienced researchers/Postdocs : i) state-of-the-art concepts and leading edge research techniques that are essential to study the behavior of complex natural systems, ii) a strong career management skills with practical courses and activities; iii) solid professional connections with industry; iv) a socially-oriented skill on environmental risks management.

15 positions are available at the following institutes:
– Università “Roma Tre”, Italy (1 Phd and 1 Postdoc positions)
– VU-University Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1 Phd and 1 Postdoc positions)
– Helmholtz-Zentrum, Potsdam, Germany (2 Phd positions)
– Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zurich, Switzerland (2 Phd positions)
– University of Durham, United Kingdom (2 PhD positions)
– University of Rennes I, France (2 PhD positions)
– Cambridge University, United Kingdom (1 PhD position)
– Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Barcelona Spain (2 PhD positions)

The ESR/PhD positions are for 36 months and the ER/Postdoc positions for 24 months. There is some flexibility with starting dates, although most positions are expected to start before the fall 2011. The fellows will work in their host institute with tight collaboration with other partner institutes in the network.

Benefits:
TOPOMOD fellows receive a Marie Curie salary. They also receive funds to support their participation in the TOPOMOD European wide research and training events. A contribution to family related expenses and the cost of annual travel back to the fellows’ home country is also provided.

SRF Positions in Complex Systems at University of Oxford, UK

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Research Fellow in Complex Systems who will join the research group based at the CABDyN Complexity Centre at the University of Oxford. The advertised post is funded through one of the CABDyN Complexity Centre’s new projects: “Forecasting Financial Crises: Measurements, Models and Predictions” is funded under the European Commission’s Framework 7, Future of Emerging Technologies Open Scheme. The project aims to address the very important challenge of improving our ability to detect early warning signals for potential instabilities and crises in financial markets, by developing novel network-based measures and software tools that can be applied to large-scale financial datasets on a real-time basis.

Candidates will be expected to have a PhD in a cognate discipline e.g. mathematical biology, computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, physics, or quantitative sociology (social network analysis) from a major research university, with postdoctoral training in complex systems and networks, and with a track record of serious interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement. Candidates will be expected to show evidence of substantial practical experience of managing and working with large-scale empirical data sets for research purposes, some familiarity more specifically with financial data sets, and an established interest in finance research literature. An appropriate track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications on complex systems and networks, and good programming skills will be essential. The Senior Research Fellow will manage and analyse different large-scale financial datasets used in this project, will oversee the day-to-day management, will present research results at international workshops and conferences, and will co-author articles for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 8 March 2011

Postdoctoral Research in Interpretation of Atmospheric Spectra of Extra-Solar Planets at University of Oxford, UK

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position starting on 1 July 2011 or soon thereafter, to work on the interpretation of atmospheric spectra of extra-solar planets, as part of a joint effort between the Astrophysics and AOPP (Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics) sub-departments. The project aims to adapt existing spectral inversion techniques, developed in the solar system context, to extra-solar planets. The focus of this position is to improve the spectroscopic line data for key molecules using existing laboratory facilities, to incorporate these into the NEMESIS spectral inversion package, and to work with Astrophysics observers to interpret existing and prepare future observations of exoplanet atmospheres.

The appointment is for two years, initially be based in AOPP, and moving to Astrophysics after approximately six months. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Astrophysics, Planetary or Atmospheric Physics or a directly related field, be highly motivated and keen to engage with both data analysis and experimental work. Experience with radiative transfer and/or modelling of planetary atmospheres is highly desirable. The candidate will work closely with Dr S Aigrain (Astrophysics, observations of transiting planets), Dr N Bowles (AOPP, spectroscopy experiments) and Dr P Irwin (AOPP, NEMESIS package), but will be encouraged to interact with other faculty members working in related areas. Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. The University of Oxford is introducing a new e-Recruitment system and this vacancy is one of a small number included in the pilot of an early version of our online application form.
