The Victoria Fernandes Scholarship in Engineering at University of Warwick, UK

The Victoria Fernandes Scholarship has been established by The School of Engineering in memory of one of our former PhD students, Victoria Fernandes. Victoria sadly died shortly before submitting her PhD thesis in 2006. Vicky (as she was widely referred to) had obtained a first class Warwick MEng in 2003 and continued onto our research degree programme, examining aspects of cementitious materials and their application to low-cost housing in the tropics. Throughout her studies she was ill with an infection that often incapacitated her, yet after every medical setback she returned to her studies with renewed determination. Her commitment to completing those studies was exceptional and extraordinary and she consciously risked her life for them. This Scholarship has been established in recognition and memory of her commitment, dedication and courage. She set an example for us all. The School of Engineering is pleased to invite applicants for this fully funded PhD Scholarship in Engineering. The Scholarship will pay an annual stipend at the standard rate (currently £13,590) and Tuition Fees at the Home/EU rate. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply but, if successful, will have to pay the difference between the Home and Overseas Fees.
Applications are welcome in any branch of engineering that are in line with the School’s research interests, amongst others these include; systems modelling, biomedical engineering, complex systems engineering, communications, photonics, intelligent systems, image processing, materials, power electronics, sensors, ultrasonics, thermal engineering, civil and water engineering, renewable and sustainable energy, fluid dynamics and optical engineering. University of Southampton, PhD Studentship in Engineering 2011 in UK

A PhD studentship is now available in the Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics research group (AFM), School of Engineering Sciences (SES), which fully covers University tuition fees (at EU/UK level**) and provides a tax-free bursary of £13,600 per year, rising each October in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a 3-year duration.

**This position is available to EU/UK applicants only, unless additional scholarships are obtained by the student to cover the overseas fees difference (i.e. £12000 in 2010/11).

Project description: This project is designed to shed more light on the receptivity stage of transition to turbulence, i.e. the stage when disturbances first enter the boundary layer. A direct numerical simulation (DNS) code is to be used to study the flow over surface obstacles (micro-roughness elements) in the presence of free stream turbulence and acoustic waves.

The objective is to map out the sensitivity of boundary layer transition to the disturbance environment and hence to help understand experimental measurements. The context for the present project is the EU ATLLAS project in which measurements of transition in high speed flow will be compared with numerical predictions.

The School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Southampton has an international reputation for research excellence. In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, the School (in collaboration with the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research) ranked second in the total number of Unit 28 academics whose research was deemed world leading or internationally excellent.

The School is a diverse community which is committed to creating an inclusive working and learning environment in which all individuals are equally treated and valued, and can achieve their potential. The School considers all studentship applications in relation to academic criteria and regardless of the individual’s race, nationality, gender, or belief.

Entry requirements: Candidates will have a first class degree (or equivalent) in relevant disciplines, and will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students. The studentship is at the standard EPSRC rate (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), Commencing as soon as possible.

Application Deadline: 08/03/2011
