The rare Charitable Research Reserve is a 913-acre property in Cambridge and North Dumfries, Ontario at the confluence of the Grand and the Speed Rivers. The goal of rare is to protect this environmentally sensitive landscape intact, in perpetuity, and to promote the use of the property for education and research. The property includes a broad range of habitats including riparian zones, upland and lowland deciduous forest (old-growth and second-growth), savanna, cliffs, coldwater streams, deciduous swamps, marshes, hedgerows, agricultural fields and old fields.

.The field of study is open and could include, but is not limited to, research in ecology, zoology, geology, restoration ecology, hydrology, botany, soil science, archaeology, agriculture and education. The Scholarship will allow students to study in a relatively undisturbed, yet highly accessible site. The monetary award will help ensure successful candidates have the necessary resources to conduct and report on their research at rare. It will also allow the student to give an oral presentation at a conference in their discipline.

PhD Researcher in Faculty of Science at Utrecht University, Netherlands: Solid-state NMR: Ultra-high Sensitivity NMR on Protein Machines in a Cellular(-like) State (1,0 fte)

You will be part of a team working on the development and application of high-sensitivity NMR methods for the study of protein complexes in a cellular-like environment. You will employ dedicated and internationally unique NMR instruments that will enhance spectroscopic sensitivity by two orders of magnitude. Your studies will target protein machines that regulate elementary aspects of signal transduction and protein folding in a cellular setting. Using NMR, you will map conformational states of a membrane protein en route to its native folded state or during function in response to changes in the physiochemical environment. These experiments will allow you to obtain a comprehensive map of the conformational landscape of such a biomolecular machine in a native-like environment. Such information is of vital relevance to understand cellular viability and function and offers unprecedented structural insight at the interface of structural and cellular biology.

The successful candidate should have a Master’s or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics, or biology with a general interest in biophysics and spectroscopy. Experience in NMR or a related spectroscopic method is desirable.

National Science Foundation Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2011 in USA

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships increase the participation of underrepresented groups in selected areas of science in the U.S. These fellowships support training and research at the postdoctoral level in a host institution in the areas of social, behavioral, and economic sciences (including history and philosophy of science) supported by NSF.

The total fellowship amount is $50,000 per year and consists of three separate types of payments. A monthly stipend of $3,750 is paid directly to the Fellow as an electronic funds transfer into a personal account at a financial institution. A research allowance of $10,000 per year is paid as a lump sum to the Fellow in the same manner for expenses directly related to the conduct of the research, such as materials and supplies, subscription fees and recovery costs for databases, travel, and publication expenses. An institutional allowance of $5,000 per year is paid to the host institution for fringe benefits, including health insurance payments for the Fellow, and for expenses incurred in support of the Fellow, such as space, equipment, and general-purpose supplies. There are no allowances for dependents or travel allowances separate from the special allowance.Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawfully admitted permanent residents and recipients of the doctoral degree within the past 4 years.
