University of the Witwatersrand Postgraduate Merit Award 2011, South Africa

University Postgraduate Merit Awards will be awarded on the basis of academic merit..Students who register for postgraduate diplomas, BEd, LLB degrees or GDE are not eligible for University Postgraduate Merit Awards.

Please note that the normal maximum tenure of a postgraduate merit award is:
a) Doctors (Post-Masters) – three years
b) Doctors (Post-Honours) – four years
c) Masters – two years
d) Honours – one year

A postgraduate merit awardee/bursar is obliged to work for a minimum of six and a maximum of nine hours per week in the University Department/School.

There is a minimum academic requirement for a University Postgraduate Merit Award and applicants should consult the rules.

The University of Cape Town Research Associateships, South Africa

The Research Associateships have been established to provide prestigious awards to reward excellent student researchers, who are registered for full-time study and to recognise and support the work of their supervisors.
The purpose of the Research Associateships is to align reward and recognition of the research undertaken by students and their supervisors, with the University’s strategic objectives to be research-led and to be a transforming university.

Eligibility Criteria
o Only students who are registered for full-time study for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Doctoral degree
o Upgrades: Where a student has upgraded from Masters to Doctoral, she/he is eligible only in the 1st and 2nd year of DOCTORAL study (notwithstanding the number of years that she/he was registered for Masters).
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 1st and 2nd years of a Master’s degree by dissertation only
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 2nd year of a Master’s degree by coursework and research.
o Students registered for full-time study in the Commerce Faculty for a 4-year Doctoral degree (whereby the 1st year consists of coursework and is certificated) are eligible and may be nominated in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year.
o Students who meet the above criteria must be NOMINATED by their supervisors. Individual application from students will not be accepted.
o Full time Staff members are not eligible.

NRF Grant for 2011-2012: Support for Black Rated Researchers, Africa

in October 2010, the Minister of Science and Technology provided additional once off funding in support of Research Capacity Development through Human Capital Development and Research Infrastructure expansion. The investment is channelled through eight programmes, managed by the National Research Foundation.

A budget allocation of R25 million is earmarked for dedicated support for women and young researchers to improve the race and gender equity profile of the research and academic workforce. Black National Research Foundation Y rated researchers with a valid Y rating as at January 2011 will be supported based on the following criteria:

Only researchers based at South African public funded universities and Science Councils are eligible for funding.
Black Y-rated researchers holding substantial NRF research grants, such as the South African Research Chairs Initiative are not eligible.
Black Y-rated researchers as at October 2010, excluding those with rating elapsing on 31 December 2010, are eligible.
All black female researchers that were recently awarded a NRF Y Rating in December 2010 are eligible.
All black male researchers that were recently awarded a NRF Y Rating in December 2010 are eligible but will only be considered for support in March 2011 should additional funds become available.

This once-off research grant of R300 000 (three hundred thousand rand) will be paid to the institution, in full, by March 2011. The grant must be fully expensed by December 2012 and may be used to cover the following research related costs: running expenses; travel; equipment; student support; and technical support.

Grant letters together with the Conditions of Grant will be sent to eligible black Y-rated researchers and the university Designated Authority will be copied on all correspondence.
