University of Cambridge, Phd Studentship in Pathogen Cell Biology 2011 in UK

Bacterial pathogen subversion of the mammalian actin cytoskeleton

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, supervised by Prof. Vassilis Koronakis, to research mechanisms underlying bacterial pathogen subversion of the mammalian cytoskeleton. Actin polymerisation is mediated by a complex signalling network requiring small G-protein activation that target N-WASP and the SCAR/WAVE complex to initiate Arp2/3-dependent actin nucleation. The detailed processes by which cellular signal transduction cascades lead to the formation of discrete actin structures remain unresolved. These signalling pathways are hijacked by pathogens like Salmonella and E.coli to promote colonisation, survival and dissemination, deploying virulence (effector) proteins to manipulate host actin dynamics.

The student will dissect key eukaryotic signalling networks targeted by these bacterial pathogens using a multidisciplinary approach involving the culture and infection of mammalian cells, cell biology, fluorescence microscopy, protein biochemistry and molecular genetics. Detailed characterisation of the mechanisms underlying actin polymerisation will not only reveal the molecular basis of disease, but also illuminate fundamental processes in cell biology.

Experience and/or Masters degree is desirable.

How to apply:

Applicants should hold or be about to achieve a First or Upper-Second (2.i) class degree in a relevant subject. Experience and/or Masters degree is desirable.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to formally apply through completion of a Graduate and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF) before attending interview.

Applications from ineligible candidates will not be considered.

Application Deadline: 28 February 2011.

University of Cambridge,Leverhulme Royal Society Africa Awards 2011 in UK: Agriculture (including animal health),Water and sanitation

Research Capacity and Infrastructure Schemes

The Leverhulme – Royal Society Africa Award is aimed at encouraging collaborative research projects between scientists based at research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania with researchers in the UK.  In particular, new collaborations are encouraged and are looked upon favourably.  As part of a discrete collaborative research project with the UK, the scheme is also intended to assist in strengthening the research and training capacity in research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania through specific skills transfer to the African institutions.

Subjects covered: The scheme will cover all areas of basic natural science covered by the Royal Society’s remit, but applications are particularly encouraged from the five identified national research priorities in Ghana and Tanzania:

  • Agriculture (including animal health)
  • Water and sanitation
  • Basic human health research (including medicinal chemistry)
  • Biodiversity (including medicinal plants and green chemistry)
  • Energy (including biofuels)

Please note that the scheme does not cover the humanities, social sciences or clinical medical research.

Duration of funding: Three year

Countries covered: The scheme will support bilateral research collaborations between UK-based scientists and researchers in either Ghana or Tanzania.

Value: The maximum support is £50,000 per annum, covering research expenses, costs for mobility and equipment, including maintenance of existing equipment (equipment costs are capped at £10,000 per year). The maximum total amount of award is £150,000. The Royal Society will pay the UK partner institution, which will be responsible for transferring finances to Ghana or Tanzania as required.

Number offered: 6 awards

Application Deadline: 9 February 2011

University of Cambridge, Scholarships in Small Animal Surgery 2011,UK

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD £ 20,970 Year oneThese Scholarships provide an outstanding opportunity to study for a postgraduate qualification. One Scholarship is available from 1 April 2011 and one from 1 July 2011. The Scholars will be trained in all aspects of small animal surgery, including soft tissue and orthopaedics. The training programme is approved by the European College of Veterinary Surgery, and the Department is an Approved Centre for the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (orthopaedics).

The Scholarships are for one year in the first instance, renewable for periods of one year up to a total of three years. They are subject to an initial monitoring period of six months, and to review on an annual basis.

The Scholars will be required to register for a Certificate and/or Diploma in the appropriate field. The training programme requires participation in the Department’s clinical service, including the out-of-hours rota, in addition to small-group teaching of veterinary students.

Applicants must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or hold a veterinary degree qualifying them for membership. Completion of an ECVS recognised internship or a minimum of two years’ experience in small animal practice is essential.

Application form (SCTS1) and information pack about the Scholarship: contact Melissa Large on 01223 337055, quoting title of the Scholarship,Send completed application form, curriculum vitae, covering letter and additional documents specified to Melissa Large, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 OES,  * Limit of tenure: The Scholarships are for one year in the first instance, renewable for periods of one year up to a total of three years. They are subject to an initial monitoring period of six months, and to review on an annual basis.
