Howard University: Sasakawa Young Leaders Foundation Fellowship (SYLFF), USA

The Sasakawa Young Leaders Foundation Fellowship (SYLFF) is designed to provide full financial support to outstanding Ph.D. students admitted to candidacy with a research concentration in international affairs and/or world peace. The SYLFF fellowship is a competitive, merit-based award and is offered upon the recommendation by the SYLFF Advisory Committee at Howard University.

Eligibility: Candidates must be advanced to Ph.D. candidacy with research and career interest in international affairs and/or world peace. Students must be enrolled full-time with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Domestic and International students are eligible for this award.

Terms: Full tuition and fees and a stipend of $15,000 for one academic year, renewable for no more than two years. The fellowship also includes a research award of up to $2,000 over the two- year period ($500 of the research award may be used for educational supplies, and $1,500 for dissertation research related travel expenses).

2 Postdoctoral Positions in Evolutionary Microbial (Meta-)Genomics, Switzerland

This fellowship is available in the research group of Dieter Ebert (University of Basel, Switzerland). The research group has an emphasis on the evolution and genetics of host-symbiont interactions

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in evolutionary and microbial genomics, metagenomics and microbiota community structure. A background in any of the following fields is desired: microbiology, bio-informatics,
population genetics, experimental evolutionary ecology, metagenomics and evolutionary genomics. The positions are funded to work on the population structure and functional aspects of host-microbiome interactions in Daphnia. The suggested methodology includes metagenome approaches, comparative metagenomics, experimental studies of host-microbe interactions, QTL typing, and population surveys. Previous experience with Daphnia is not required, but excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, good work ethics, and the ability to think creatively and critically are desired. The working language at the institute is English. Starting dates are flexible, from April 2011 onwards. Positions are funded for 3 years with a 1 year trial period.

Finnish Government Scholarship 2011-2012, Finland

The Finnish Government offers scholarships of 3-9 months for Doctoral level studies, research and teaching at a higher education institution in Finland. The Finnish Government Scholarship Pool programme is open to young researchers from all academic fields. The scholarships can not be applied for post-Doctoral studies or research.

The scholarships are based mainly on cultural agreements or similar arrangements between Finland and the following countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine.

To be eligible, the applicant must:

* intend to pursue post-Master’s level studies as a visiting student, participate in a research project or teach at a higher education institution or public research institute in Finland; priority will be given to doctoral studies
* have established contact with the Finnish receiving institution before applying
* have a letter of invitation from the academic supervisor in Finland; the invitation should also include a timetable
* have earned a Master’s-level degree before applying
* not have spent already more than one year at a Finnish higher education institution immediately before the intended scholarship period in Finland
* be able to give proof of sufficient skills in speaking and writing the language needed in study/research
* be a national of one of the eligible countries listed above.
