PhD Student/Junior Researcher in Cell Biology-Systems Biology, Luxembourg

The objective of the project is to use a modeling-based approach to gain further insights on the mechanistic of pro-inflammatory processes occurring in major diseases. More precisely, the study will focus on the characterization of calcium-dependent oxidative activity in human neutrophils. A computational approach will be used to rationalize data from the Life Science Research Unit into a mathematical model that can predict new functional schemes. This PhD studentship will involve collaboration between Pr. E. Tschirhart at the University of Luxembourg and Dr. G. Dupont at the Unit of Theoretical Chronobiology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. It is expected that the student will share his/her time about equally between Luxembourg and Brussels.
Activities:

* Perform biological experiments in the area of transductional signalling pathways under the supervision of Pr. E. Tschirhart
* Develop computational models based on experimental findings under the supervision of Dr. G. Dupont
* Write a doctoral thesis in the domain of Cell Biology – System Biology
* Contribute to research in the field of inflammation to obtain a PhD degree in Life Sciences
* Collaborate actively with other group members

Profile:

* Master in Biology (including computational modeling) with a background in mathematics or physics
* Knowledge in data integration and experience in work lab would be ideal
* Good oral and written English skills

Offer:

* A modern, well-equipped laboratory in an international dynamic research-oriented environment
* A motivating and interdisciplinary research team

2 Postdoctoral Positions in Evolutionary Microbial (Meta-)Genomics, Switzerland

This fellowship is available in the research group of Dieter Ebert (University of Basel, Switzerland). The research group has an emphasis on the evolution and genetics of host-symbiont interactions

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in evolutionary and microbial genomics, metagenomics and microbiota community structure. A background in any of the following fields is desired: microbiology, bio-informatics,
population genetics, experimental evolutionary ecology, metagenomics and evolutionary genomics. The positions are funded to work on the population structure and functional aspects of host-microbiome interactions in Daphnia. The suggested methodology includes metagenome approaches, comparative metagenomics, experimental studies of host-microbe interactions, QTL typing, and population surveys. Previous experience with Daphnia is not required, but excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, good work ethics, and the ability to think creatively and critically are desired. The working language at the institute is English. Starting dates are flexible, from April 2011 onwards. Positions are funded for 3 years with a 1 year trial period.
Fellowship Application Deadline: 20 January 2011

30 Postdoctoral Fellowships Available at the Universities of the Académie Louvain, Belgium

Incoming post-doctoral fellowships of the Académie universitaire Louvain (AUL) are offered to scientists from all nationalities in order to strengthen the bilateral S&T collaborations as well as the realisation of the European Research Area.

They are assigned to researchers with a PhD degree (or equivalent), proving their expertise and research capacity by a personal scientific record.

The researchers must not have spent more than 24 months out of the last 3 years in Belgium.

The Fellowships, granted for a stay of 12 to 24 months in one of the Académie universitaire Louvain research unit, concern all fields of research activities dealt with by the AUL.

The amount includes a monthly allowance, social security coverage, insurance expenses and an annual bench fee of 2.500 to 5000 eur for the person concerned.

The stimulation of international mobility and the attraction of researchers from abroad is one of the priorities of the European Research Area.
The Académie universitaire Louvain (AUL) is contributing to this objective by granting post-doc fellowships to highly qualified foreign scientists inviting them to work in a Belgian research team during a certain period of time. The ultimate aim is to establish S&T collaborations and lasting networks between the respective research teams.

Benefits

The fellowship comprises:

– a net monthly allowance, taking into account the experience of the fellow ;
– a bench fee of 5.000 eur/year for laboratory-based research or 2.500/year for non-laboratory based research;
– the personal liability insurance costs;
– the contribution to the National Office of Social Security
