The UCT/CSIR Scholarship programme for South Africa Students

Job Description: Applications are invited for a limited number of scholarships for South African students who will register in 2011 at the University of Cape Town for the Honours, Master’s and Doctoral degrees, within the following disciplines, or in closely related disciplines:

Environmental Technologies
Engineering
Materials Science and Manufacturing

Natural & Physical Sciences

Eligibility
Only students who register as full-time students and who are proceeding into the FIRST year of the degree are eligible. Students who will register in 2011 for a 2nd year of Masters or 2nd or 3rd year of PhD are INELIGIBLE. Only students who will register for study in one (or more) of the areas of study shown above are eligible.

Value of Awards
Honours – R60,000; Masters – R70,000; Doctoral – R80,000 per annum

Tenure
Honour’s – strictly 1 year; Master’s – 2 Years – Second year renewable on proof of satisfactory progress, and Doctoral – 3 Years – Second and third years renewable on proof of satisfactory progress.
Please Note: Renewals are NOT guaranteed and will depend on the availability of funds and academic progress.

(1) Academic Merit. The Scholarships will be granted on the basis of academic merit.
Applicants must have achieved at least 60% for their final undergraduate majors or the Honour’s degree)

Application Procedure
1. A letter of application addressed to the Director of the PGC&FO, UCT and a completed Application Form available from the Postgraduate Funding Office or from URL: http://www.uct.ac.za/apply/funding/postgraduate/applications/

2. A one A-4 page CV giving the future intentions of the applicant.

3. 2 letters of reference from academics who have taught/supervised the applicants in the past three years

4. All original or certified copies of university transcripts (do not include certificates), including those of the applicant’s undergraduate degree(s).

5. Proof of acceptance of the student into the proposed academic department, in the form of a brief letter/statement from the Faculty Manager.

6. Master’s and Doctoral applicants – A copy of the applicant’s abstract of the proposed study (no longer than ONE A-4 page) and an indication that a Supervisor has been secured and that the research proposal has been accepted by the Department.

7. Applicants must be prepared to enter into a contract with the CSIR in which the student undertakes to enter into employment with the CSIR for at least the tenure of the scholarship held, provided that suitable vacancies exist within the CSIR

8. Short-listed Applicants must be prepared to undergo interviews with officials from the CSIR

Istanbul Sehir University

Istanbul Sehir University, established in 2008, will open its doors for the very first students with 4 faculties and 10 departments. The university invites international applicants to come study in Istanbul, Turkey.

  • Duration of Study: At our university, as is the common practice in Turkey, undergraduate programs are 4 years. However, you may shorten this time by taking courses in summer school.
  • Language of Instruction: The medium of instruction at our university is English. Students whose English level is not sufficient will go through one year of English Preparatory Program.
  • Structure of Education: Undergraduate programs are 4 years. All undergraduate programs will follow a common core curriculum in the first year of study. Upon successful completion of first year, students will be given the option to change their departments.
  • Double Major and Minor Opportunities: Under the Double Major Program you may follow two undergraduate programs and receive two diplomas. With our Minor Programs, you will be able to receive a certificate that supports your major.

Eligibility:

All international students must be either graduates or in their final year of schools equivalent to Turkish High Schools.  Here you can find the quotas for each department.

Scholarships

The entire quota of international students entering the university in the 2010-2011 academic year will be given a full scholarship (including tuition fees, accommodation and health insurance).

Accommodation:
International students entering the university for the 2010-2011 academic year will be provided rooms in the dormitories free of charge.

Health Services and Insurance:
The university will provide health insurance for all international students in the 2010-2011 academic year.

1. Undergraduate Application Form for international students,
2. Certified English or Turkish translation of your diploma (if available) (your original diploma and a certificate showing equivalency to the Turkish high school diploma will be requested at registration),
3. Certified English or Turkish translation of your transcript (the document, approved by the school administration showing high school courses taken and grades received by the applicant),
4. Certified English or Turkish translation of your national ID card or passport,
5. A copy of your exam results (if available) indicating English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, etc),
6. One passport size photo (4.5cm x 6 cm),
7. Certified English or Turkish translation of one of the test results (you can find the list on the official website)

Evaluation op applications:
The evaluation of applications and the placement of applicants will be carried out by the Istanbul ?ehir University Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee may accept some applicants who have fulfilled the requirements after preliminary consideration. Applicants without any test results, if considered appropriate, will be called to take the International Students Entrance Exam.

Results:
The names of accepted candidates will be announced on the university’s web site and applicants will be notified online. Students who confirm the notification will be sent a letter of acceptance via mail and online. Applicants must then present their acceptance letter, together with all other required forms, to the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in their countries to receive a student visa.

Monash South Africa scholarship

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are available to South African and international students. Only students who are school-leavers (Year 12 or equivalent) and who achieve exceptionally high academic results will be considered for a Monash South Africa scholarship.

The scholarships are valued at a maximum of 50 – 100 per cent of the annual course fee and are available for full-time study only. Scholarships do not cover other costs such as accommodation, travel and textbooks.

Scholarships are renewable each year, providing that students maintain a high academic achievement. At the end of each year, the Bursary and Scholarships Committee will assess students’ performance and determine whether they are eligible to continue to receive the scholarship.

To be eligible for a scholarship you must first be accepted into a course at Monash South Africa.
