Western Cape Provincia Government Scholarships for Social Development Clinical Social Work Honour Students, South Africa

Funds have been made available by the PGWC to meet the need and demand for professional specialist social workers in the treatment of substance abuse.
Applications are invited for a number of scholarships that are available to support students who will register in 2011 for full time study in the Department of Social Development at the University of Cape Town, and who will study specifically in the field of substance abuse.
The scholarship programme aims to encourage further education and specialist training of social work professionals in substance abuse interventions who work in either Provincial Government or non-governmental professional settings.
Academic Criteria
Eligible candidates will have a relevant Bachelor’s degree and applicants who have been employed as social work professionals either in provincial Government or in a non-governmental professional field are encouraged to apply.
The Value of the Awards: The scholarships are valued at R 22 900 each and are tenable for one year only. No renewal can be made for a second year of Honour’s study.

2 PhD Positions in Evolutionary Ecology of Host-Microbiota Interactions, Switzerland

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in evolutionary and microbial genomics, metagenomics and microbiota community structure. Knowledge in any of the following fields is helpful: microbiology, bio-informatics, population genetics, experimental evolutionary ecology, metagenomics and evolutionary genomics. The positions are funded to work on the functional aspects of host-microbiome interactions in Daphnia. The suggested methodology includes comparative meta-genomics, experimental studies of hostmicrobe/ microbiota interactions, QTL typing, and population surveys. Previous experience with Daphnia is not required, but excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, good work ethics, and the ability to think creatively and critically are desired. The Association represents over seventy higher education institutions in the United Kingdom with active transatlantic links and interests, most of which have a variety of individual exchange arrangements with North American universities and colleges. BUTEX includes in its brief the promotion of UK higher education in North America and the regular exchange of information among its members on current international education issues.

BUTEX works closely with relevant sister organisations such as the British Council, CBIE (Canadian Bureau of International Education), CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), EAIE (European Association of International Educators), NAFSA ( Association of International Educators) and UKCISA (The Council for International Education).

Each year BUTEX awards sixteen scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year.

Eight scholarships are available to UK students studying abroad in the USA or Canada and a further eight scholarships are available to North American students studying in the UK.

The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
