2011PhD Studentship in Computer Science, Privacy and Security, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

The Department of Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) offers a stimulating research environment in a range of topics such as complexity theory and approximation algorithms, computer and network security, cryptography, programming languages, and formal methods. Security and safety of computer and network-based systems has been identified as an area of strategic importance.

The goal of this PhD project is to develop mechanisms and evaluate privacy and security issues for decentralized social networks in particular and for provider-independent personal communications in general. This is a four-year, time-limited position and normally includes 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. Research/doctoral students must be registered at KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible. The applicant is expected to have a strong background and interest in computer science, including subjects such as networking, distributed systems, security, and game theory.

PhD Position – Thermal Effects in 3D Integrated Circuits, France

The fellowship will be grated throughout the duration of the work, which will take place in a highly dynamic and international field in Grenoble (France).
The high requirements on today’s mobile systems push them beyond the limit of a simple communication tool, and make them reminiscent of a
global assistance terminal that includes entertainment, office and general services. This translates into a continuous increase in terms
of required computational performance. The scaling ability of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology offers one
possible way to increase the system performance. However, it comes with a high cost in terms of fabrication complexity and power
efficiency. Another alternative that addresses these hurdles consists of vertically staking electronic chips on top of each other using
vertical connections (Fig. 1) called the through-silicon vias (TSV), thus increasing the computational performance, while using the same
system footprint.

Key competences:

– Knowledge in the field of classical thermal physics
– Understanding of solid-state physics and MOS transistors
– Ability to carry out physical modelling and numerical simulations
using a finite element simulator
– Ability to carry out electrical test and characterization and to
develop automated data input and processing tools
– Basic understanding of CMOS circuits and logic systems
– Ability to design basic logic circuits or ability to develop this competence
– Required team work within the frame of numerous collaborations with the involved teams
– Excellent time management skills
– Creativity, self-motivation, personal engagement
– Very good academic grade

2011 PhD Positions in Structural Engineering, Bauhaus University, Germany

The overall aim of the Research training group is to assess the reliability, safety and robustness of numerical models. This evaluation considers a wide range of aspects and models. This includes, but is not restricted to, models that describe loads or the material and structural behavior of systems in structural engineering. Of particular interest are the interactions of these models in complex systems. Their influence on the quality of models of complex coupled systems is to be determined.

We see ourselves as an international research training group. Very good English skills are a prerequisite for internal communication, for publications in scientific journals, and for a mandatory stay abroad, serving the scientific exchange with our international cooperation partners. Good German skills are additionally expected from international applicants.
In order to allow a fast realization of models, of couplings, and of evaluation methods, command of one or several programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab) is of advantage.
