PhD Position with Scholarship in Materials Science, UBC Okanagan School of Engineering, Canada

A funded position for a PhD student is immediately available in the field of Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Materials Science.

The candidate should have a Master’s degree in Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering. Knowledge of materials characterization techniques is necessary (optical microscopy, SEM, EDX, image analysis, microstructure characterization).

Experience with thermal analysis, diffraction techniques, high-temperature mechanical behavior measurement, powder metallurgy and metalcasting are an asset.

The student will work on the development of creep-resistant magnesium alloys, and their subsequent characterization.

PhD Scholarship (Synthesis of photosensitisers for water splitting), Australia

The School is offering a PhD scholarship in chemistry, involving a research project related to “Clean energy generation: Synthesis of photosensitisers for water splitting”, working at a new research centre, Centre for Organic Photonics and Electronics.

Commencement: The Scholarship will commence once the student has enrolled in a PhD program through the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, the University of Queensland (For further information on the Basis of Admission to a UQ research higher degree, please see :

It is desirable that the successful candidate will take up the position as soon as possible.

The Person: Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree with 1st class honours in chemistry, or a master’s degree with a research component (chemistry related fields). Both domestic and overseas applicants will be considered if they fulfil the criteria for PhD admission of the University of Queensland and demonstrate excellent research capacity. For overseas applicants, valid English language proficiency test results that meet with the University requirements: are required for the application.

Remuneration: Successful candidates not holding an APA will be awarded a research scholarship valued at $22,500 per annum for 3 years (tax exempt). There is also a possible 6 month extension to the appointments. For international students, it is possible to waive the tuition fee for highly competitive applications.

Rothamsted International Fellowships for Developing Countries

These are open to mid-career scientists from any developing or emerging country to undertake projects for 6 to 12 months at Rothamsted Research, UK. This enables them to pursue strategic and applied research, learn new techniques or undertake other studies in the agricultural sciences. The Fellowship scheme is funded entirely by donations including from charitable trusts, foundations and individuals. Since 1993, 125 RI Fellowships have been awarded to scientists from 30 countries.

African Fellows Programme (AFP)

These are open to mid-career scientists from Sub-Saharan African countries to carry-out projects for 4 to 12 months at universities or research institutes across Europe. The programme addresses local agricultural problems and facilitates capacity building and knowledge transfer. The scheme is funded entirely by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and is administered by Rothamsted International. Since 2004, 27 Fellowships have been awarded to scientists from 14 African countries.
