Danish Government Scholarships for Exchange Students/Young Researchers 2011/2012

These scholarships are aimed at highly qualified exchange students and young research scientists from the above mentioned countries, who wish to immerse themselves into studies in Danish language and culture, or fields of study otherwise related to Denmark such as design, or environmental studies, and so on.

Students who are enrolled in a full degree-programme in Denmark are not considered exchange students and are not eligible for a scholarship.

Please notice that only postgraduate students can apply for the scholarships. However, for studies in Danish language and literature, students can apply already at bachelor level, provided they have studied Danish language 2 years previous to their arrival to Denmark.

The scholarship funds for the Cultural Agreements are gathered into a single pool for long-term study periods (exept for China, Japan, Israel, Egypt and Russia) and Danish summer language courses. This means that the 23 countries concerned are not guaranteed an exact number of scholarships. An individual assessment will be carried out by The Danish Agency for International Education based on certain criteria, explained in the paragraph “Selection Criteria” below.

The scholarship amount for long-term periods will however remain unchanged, with a monthly stipend of 5,000 DKK. The Danish Government Scholarships cover tuition fees and living expenses for one person only.

The deadline for applications for long term study periods is 28th of February 2011.

The deadline for applications for summer language courses is 28th of March 2011.

Utrecht Excellence Scholarships for Master’s Programmes, Netherlands

The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship offers a number of highly talented prospective students the opportunity to pursue a degree in a selected number of fields at Utrecht University:

International Bachelor’s programmes:

* Economics and Business Economics
* Liberal Arts & Sciences at University College Utrecht

International Master’s programmes offered by the following Graduate Schools:

* Graduate School of Geo sciences
* Graduate School of Humanities
* Graduate School of Law, Economics and Governance
* Graduate School of Life Sciences
* Graduate School of Natural Sciences
* Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Sciences

The scholarship programme is highly selective. Only candidates showing the highest achievement and promise may receive a scholarship.

Duration and number of scholarships

Selected students receive a scholarship for the duration of the degree programme, which is a maximum of two years for a Master’s degree and three years for a Bachelor’s degree. Approximately 55 scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarship will only be renewed for the second (and third) year if the student is making satisfactory progress towards the degree.
Amount of scholarship

Selected students are awarded a scholarship between 5 000 and 27 300 euro per year. Students should be aware that the grant is not necessarily a full scholarship, and that it may be necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance study and stay completely. As one of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands, students from abroad must prove to the IND (immigration and naturalisation office) that they have sufficient financial means. Eligibility criteria

The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for this scholarship. The applicant should:

1. Not have the Dutch or an EU/EER nationality;
2. Hold a non-Dutch secondary school diploma;
3. Have been admitted to an International Master’s programme within one of the Graduate Schools mentioned above, the Bachelor’s programme in Economics and Business Economics or to University College Utrecht;
4. Hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree (for a Master’s programme) or secondary school diploma (for a Bachelor’s programme), or an equivalent thereof;
5. Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa;

Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means the student is not eligible for this scholarship.

Postdoctoral positions, The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality, Japan

The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality (CSSI) invites applications from excellent scholars for a few postdoctoral positions. (The number of the positions depends on the center’s budget for the next academic year.) The center pursues development of new theories and methodologies on social stratification and inequality with emphasis on studies of rational choice theory, minorities (including gender stratification and inequality), East Asia, transnational migration (especially focusing on “newcomers” in Japan), and fairness. Faculty members of the center are sociologists, social psychologists, cultural anthropologists, religious anthropologists, a historian, and economists, and they study social stratification and inequality from various viewpoints. In addition, the CSSI conducts comparative studies of absolute poverty with the Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality.
Applicants should hold doctoral degrees or show academic performance equivalent to holders of doctoral degrees. They should have a good command of English. Postdoctoral fellows of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are not eligible for this application.
The successful candidates will be expected to work under the supervision of the faculty members of the center from April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012. (The starting date is negotiable.) Though the initial contract ends on March 31, 2012, the contract will be extended for one more year. The salary of a successful candidate will be 270,000 – 350,000 yen per month depending on his/her academic career. Travel and housing allowances will be paid to those who are eligible for them. Grants for excellent research projects proposed by the successful candidates will be provided. The center also academically and financially supports their presentations at international conferences.
