Erasmsu Mundus: International MSc. in Environmental Technology and Engineering

The IMETE programme intensively promotes networking and exchange of knowledge and experience between different nationalities, in particular with scholars and students from developing countries and countries in transition, which are rapidly growing markets for the application of environmental technologies.
IMETE is offered by a consortium consisting of 3 leading Higher Education Institutes: Ghent University (UGent, Gent, Belgium), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands), and Institute of Chemical Technology Prague (ICTP, Prague, Czech Republic). Numerous associated partners from all over the world contribute to the programme. (more information).

Student mobility within Europe is an integral part of the programme, which contains 120 ECTS (2 years). During the programme, students study at Delft (The Nederlands), Prague (Czech Republic) and Gent (Belgium). The master thesis research is carried out in one of these locations, or in one of the many associated partner institutions all over the world.

Physicist (PhD Student) for Dosimetry Development in Proton Therapy, Netherlands

The Radiotherapy department of the UMCG treats approximately 3,600 patients per year. It is staffed by 180 employees from a range of disciplines. Equipment in the department currently includes seven linear accelerators for megavoltage photon and electron radiation treatments and apparatus for photon and electron dosimetry. The UMCG is preparing for a clinical facility to provide proton radiation therapy on its campus, because this treatment modality offers a considerable advance in conforming the treatment dose to the target and thereby reducing side effects for the patient. A very good knowledge of the absolute radiation dose is a prerequisite to achieve this.
The Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) is a national institute for research in the fields of fundamental and applied atomic and subatomic physics. It is an interfaculty institute of the University of Groningen and its 120 staff members are employed partly by the university and partly by the NWO Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM). KVI and UMCG are partners in PARTREC, Particle Therapy Research Centre, a centre established to optimize the use of particle irradiations in radiation oncology.

The joint project of UMCG and KVI within PARTREC to develop “A national dosimetry standard for proton therapy” is funded by Technology Foundation STW. This project will be conducted in collaboration with the Dutch national metrology institute Van Swinden Laboratory (VSL) in Delft. Purpose is to develop a dosimeter to make absolute dose measurements traceable to an (inter)national standard. Also a reference beam line for clinical relevant proton beams will be designed to enable (inter)national intercomparisons of dosimetry equipment at KVI. VSL will use the dosimeter standard to perform certified calibrations on a commercial base of locally used “working standards” for proton beams used in public health and industry, according to established international protocols.

* Design of a calorimeter, encompassing the conducting of simulations, process modelling, read-out electronics and data-acquisition.
* Experimental study to characterise and to optimize the performance of the calorimeter, encompassing the study of the effects of dynamic dose application and spatial variations of a dose distribution.
* Study of the contributions of neutrons to the signal formation.
* Study of short and long term effects of material damage and chemical changes due to interactions of the radiation with calorimeter material.
* Assistance in the preparation and commissioning of the reference beam line at KVI.
* Publication and presentation of the results of the research in international scientific journals and conferences.
* Active participation in the research group at UMCG and KVI working in fields related to physics and technology for radiation therapy and especially proton therapy.
* Contribution to the supervision of MSc and BSc students doing their research in the group.
* Contribution to general (a.o. teaching) tasks at KVI and/or UMCG.
* Participation in the PhD-educational program of the FANTOM and Guide graduate schools.

4 Postdoctoral Positions in Bio/Nanotechnology and Material Science, Italy

Applications are invited for 4 Post-doctoral positions in bio/nanotechnology and material science related research programs. The research activities will take place in the Smart Materials Group of the (CBN), Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) that is based in Lecce, Italy.

The Center possesses world class facilities and expertise in the areas of materials processing and development with emphasis to surface science, nanoparticles production, magnetic, conducting and biocompatible nanocomposites, thermo/mechanical testing, laser spectroscopy, confocal and scanning probe microscopies, biology/biotechnology, genomics/proteomics, third generation photovoltaics, high performance computing, density functional-theory and computational nanoscience. Close collaborations exist with industry, University departments, and other research centers in Italy and abroad.

Position 1
Two years postdoctoral position in development and thermo/mechanical characterization of novel plastic nanocomposite materials targeting on mechanically reinforced and thermally resistive materials to be used in the areas of buildings and constructions, automotive and aviation industry, packaging. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Materials Science, Physics, Engineering. Previous experience in thermo/mechanical characterization of materials will be appreciated.

Position 2
Two years postdoctoral position in the development, processing, chemical modifications and characterization of natural polymers, biopolymers and biocompatible polymers. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Bio Engineering. Previous experience in polymer chemistry is essential, and experience in biopolymers will be highly appreciated.

Position 3
Two years postdoctoral position in surface processing and characterization of materials. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering. Candidates with previous experience in surface patterning (photopatterning, laser ablation, electrochemical patterning, etc.), thin film deposition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be preferred.

Position 4
Two years postdoctoral position in the development and characterization of magnetic and conducting polymer-based nanocomposites. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering. Candidates with previous experience in any of the following fields: nanoparticles preparation, nanocomposites preparation, measurements of conductivity, magnetic characterization will be preferred.
