Scholarship Description: The Persian Empire (c. 550-330 BCE) was the first real world empire and comprised a staggering multitude of nations and cultures. Scholars working on this unprecedented historical phenomenon have given most weight to the Greco-Roman sources, which, naturally, tend to focus mostly on Greek affairs and on the Greco-Persian wars (490-479). Since the early 1980s a new perspective has been growing, seeking to deconstruct the necessarily limited scope of the classical sources, describing long-term processes and underlying structures, and giving due attention to primary sources from within the empire, despite the inherent limitations that these sources also have.
