PhD Position in Intelligent Transport Systems, Sweden

This Ph.D student positions is a part of Chalmers Area of Advance in Transport. The vision in this area is to be among the internationally leading universities with regards to green, safe and efficient future transport systems. To achieve this, we are building on a wide range of disciplines and close connection between research and higher education and on an intense cooperation with industry and societal actors.

In response to the need for clean, efficient, safe and sustainable transportation the position invites applicants who are willing to contribute to the research area of advanced intelligent transport system design. Activities will involve research on;

• vehicle and vehicle flow modelling and analysis,
• efficient system design by optimal autonomous applications,
• detection and identification of relevant unattended events, failures,
• elaborate novel fault tolerant Intelligent Transport Systems.

The position aims at finding novel safe and optimal methods to nowadays most urgent claims against ITS by developing fault tolerant and energy efficient solutions. The applicant should have an interest in both academic and applied research to be successful. We invite candidates interested in ground transport and traffic applications to submit their application.

Applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree (civilingenjörsexamen) in, preferably, mechanical, electrical, control or transportation engineering resp. engineering physics or related fields.

Good analytical and communication (both oral and written) skills and ability to work independently as well as become an active team member. Excellent command of English language is needed.

Knowledge of software like MATLAB, VISSIM, C++ is an advantage. As PhD positions also involve taking part in the undergraduate education, and teaching activities in the B.Sc. programs are conducted in Swedish (English in M.Sc. programs), Swedish language is also an advantage.

European Masters on Advanced Robotics Scholarship: Robotics

EMARO is an integrated Masters course conducted by: Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France), Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), and the University of Genova (Italy).
Objectives:
The Masters is designed to promote a high-quality educational offer in the area of advanced and intelligent robotics. After graduation the students will have mastered the different areas of robotics (Mathematical modeling, Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical design) in order to be able to deal with Robotics systems as a whole rather than just to concentrate on one particular area. The career prospects for EMARO graduates are very good as the proposed courses are relevant to today’s high technology society and because the current output of universities is insufficient to meet the demands of industry and research programmes. Students may take the master as a professional terminal degree, or join PhD programmes afterwards.
Duration and mobility:
The programme of study lasts two academic years (120 ECTS) split into four equally loaded semesters. The student has to spend the first two semesters in one institution and the second two semesters in another institution.

The Erasmus Mundus programme supports high-quality European Masters Courses, by providing attractive grants for students having excellent academic results from around the world (non European and European) to engage in postgraduate study at EMARO institutions. The application to an Erasmus Mundus scholarship is done through the classical student’s application procedure of EMARO. Please note that the number of applications must be limited to three Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses maximum. In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three EM Courses he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

Scholarship Application Deadline:

Category A scholarships (application open from 5 October to 10 December 2010),
Western Balkan and Turkey window for 2011/2012 (application open from 5 October to 10 January 2011).
Category B scholarships (application open from 5 October till 20 January 2011).

Postdoctoral Position in Advanced Packaging, Switzerland

A position is available immediately in the advanced thermal packaging project at the IBM Research – Zurich laboratory for research on novel packaging approaches with respect to heat removal and power / signal delivery for high-performance 3D-chip stacks. This effort supports IBM’s microprocessor platform and will strengthen its position as global leader in innovative thermal management and packaging solutions.

Requirements

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who are interested in joining our multi-disciplinary research team to extend packaging technology for high-performance computing platforms in the exascale era. Enabling technologies are the vertical integration of microprocessors and memory dies, as well as silicon photonic transceiver modules to improve communication bandwidth. The successful candidate will have a strong interdisciplinary background in physics, engineering, and material science (PhD). Required is a solid understanding of state-of-the-art thermo-mechanical modeling approaches and reliability testing methods. A broad knowledge in micro-fabrication and thermo-mechanical design is beneficial. The scope of the work spans from applied materials research to the development of novel packaging concepts tailored to vertical integration.
